Frequently Asked Questions

We know starting therapy can feel like a big step. Here are answers to the questions we hear most often.

Your first session is a relaxed, no-pressure intake appointment. We use this time to get to know you — your background, what's bringing you in, and what you're hoping to get out of therapy. There's no expectation to share everything at once. We'll talk through your goals together and begin building a personalized treatment plan. Most clients leave the first session feeling heard and with a clearer sense of direction.

You don't have to figure that out alone. During your free consultation, we'll listen to what you're going through and recommend the best fit — whether that's individual therapy, grief counseling, family sessions, or one of Erica's specialty programs. If your needs change over time, we adjust with you.

Yes. We offer a brief initial consultation so you can ask questions, get a feel for our approach, and decide if we're the right fit — with zero pressure. Reach out through our contact form or give us a call to schedule yours.

We work with several insurance providers and can help verify your benefits before your first appointment. We also offer private pay options for clients who prefer not to use insurance or whose plan we don't currently accept. Contact us directly and we'll walk you through your options so there are no surprises.

Copayments are required prior to the date of service for all telehealth and in‑office appointments. We kindly ask that copays be submitted in advance to help us prepare for your visit. Please note that appointments may need to be cancelled or rescheduled if payment is not received.

Session fees vary depending on the type of service and clinician. We believe cost should never be a barrier to care, so we're happy to discuss sliding scale options and payment plans during your consultation. Please reach out and we'll find something that works for your situation.

Absolutely. We offer secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth sessions for clients throughout Virginia. Virtual therapy is just as effective as in-person for most concerns and gives you the flexibility to attend from home, your car, or wherever you feel comfortable. Dr. Kenneth Richmond, MD, MSOL is currently accepting new telehealth appointments for psychiatric services.

We use a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform — no app download required. You'll receive a private session link by email before your appointment; just click it from any modern browser on your phone, tablet, or computer. To get the most out of your virtual session: find a quiet, private space, use headphones if possible, ensure a stable internet connection, and test your camera and microphone a few minutes before we begin. If you run into any technical issues, just call us at (757) 726-2000 and we'll sort it out together.

Most clients start with weekly sessions, especially early in treatment when building momentum matters most. As you progress, sessions may shift to bi-weekly or monthly. We always follow your lead — therapy should fit your life, not the other way around.

We offer flexible scheduling including daytime, evening, and some weekend appointments to accommodate busy schedules. Availability varies by clinician. Contact us to find a time that works for you.

Yes. Everything discussed in therapy is strictly confidential under HIPAA and Virginia state law. The only exceptions are situations involving imminent risk of harm to yourself or others, or mandated reporting requirements — and we'll always explain these limits clearly at the start of treatment. Your privacy is something we take very seriously.

Completely normal — and honestly, it means you're taking a brave step. Most people feel some anxiety before their first session. Our team is trained to create a warm, judgment-free environment from the moment you walk in (or log on). You set the pace. There's no pressure to share more than you're ready for.
